Waffles Staff Picks - July Edition


Welcome to the July edition of the Waffles.fm Staff Picks. Please remember we do not look to balance genres or purposely seek out diversity - these are simply albums by bands that we love, and hope that you find something you enjoy as well. Note that each pick may be an individual track, or an entire album (for the purpose of the theme). In every case, however, the entire album will be FL.

We would also like to give a very warm welcome to 420billy, our newest Waffle Iron and member of staff.
 
Theme: Independence

Artist: The Byrds
Album: The Notorious Byrd Brothers
Track: Wasn't Born To Follow

To my ears, the centerpiece of side one of this rather less well known Byrds classic. You really get the feel of the open road from this one. One of a couple songs on the album about being independent of society, this one comes from a rather unlikely souce, pop songwriting masters Gerry Goffin and Carole King. David Crosby left the band in part because of the Goffin-King songs on this album, and by the time the Byrds were done making this album, only Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman remained in the band. But yet despite the personnel mess, the album is high quality mellow psychedelia with some nice country tinges. Wasn't Born To Follow doesn't really sound like a Carole King song at all when the Byrds are through with it.

How can one be truly independent and free in this maelstrom of a life we are all a part of? I think that the biggest thing may be to keep things simple, centered, and calm - be The Eye Of All Storms.

Are you aware that the weekend of July 4th is officially Big Willie Weekend? I need to pay respect where it's due: Will Smith is the American Dream. The only thing that can top revisiting Independence Day is doing it with Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, and Mike Nelson- the hecklers from Mystery Science Theater 3000. If you aren't familiar with Rifftrax, it's hilarious commentary that you play in synch with the movie. It's like watching the movie with friends, except they're actually funny.

(note: movie not included with the torrent- you need to supply your own copy. But that's not a problem because you already own it on bluray, DVD, and VHS right?)

Sometimes your newfound independence goes a bit far.. but it can be kinda magical. Like a mescaline flower in the desert.

I've gone independent by ignoring this month's theme of independence. If this song has anything to do with independence it's a coincidence. I don't know what it's about really, but I enjoy it.

Track: Freedom

I chose this after much deliberation, for both its relationship to the theme, and the fact it is Free Leech.

Album: Greatest Hits

Will Smith was in Independence Day and this collection of hits features incredible works of art like "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air", "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It", and "Parents Just Don't Understand". In case you didn't get enough Willy & Independence from Condon's pick! If you don't snatch this and listen to it all the way through, you just don't like independence.
