Netflix Bringing Stranger Things, Death Note & Bright to Comic-Con

Recommended Posts

Netflix is bringing two of its upcoming original movies, in the forms of Bright and Death Note, to the 2017 International Comic-Con in San Diego. The streaming service will also be hosting panels for the new seasons of two of its original series – namely, Stranger Things and Voltron: Legendary Defender – at this year’s major Comic-Con event.

Bright and Death Note are both fitting choices for the streaming giant to bring to the annual event, with the former of the two genre movies being a fantasy/buddy cop mashup directed by David Ayer (End of Watch, Suicide Squad). By comparison, the latter is an Americanized take on the anime/manga of the same name, as directed by the cult horror filmmaker Adam Wingard (You’re Next, The Guest). Wingard also held the “secret” premiere for his Blair Witch at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2016 and debuted You’re Next there in 2013, so he’s far from being a stranger to the ‘Con.

Whereas Voltron is a familiar face at Comic-Con too, Stranger Things had just premiered its first season around the time of the 2016 International Comic-Con – meaning this year’s Comic-Con will mark the hit Netflix show’s first time at the event. Nevertheless, it’s more than appropriate that the genre-blending, 1980s cinema love letter that is Stranger Things should make an appearance at the event this year, ahead of its second season premiering around Halloween.

Here are the official details concerning Netflix’s (non-Marvel) movie and TV show panels and events at the 2017 International Comic-Con:

Zarkon has been defeated and Shiro is nowhere to be found. Without a pilot for the black lion or the ability to form Voltron, the team must quickly devise a plan as the ascension of Prince Lotor pulls them into a perilous game of cat-and-mouse. Join executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos, co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery, Bex Taylor-Klaus and Tyler Labine as they debut the first episode of season three of the Netflix original series DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender. All attendees will receive an SDCC-exclusive poster created by the Voltron crew and the new Voltron chapter book “The Rise of Voltron” from Simon & Schuster.

Experience a sneak peek at David Ayer’s new film Bright. Set in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves and fairies have co-existed since the beginning of time, this action-packed and completely original film will make for a must-see panel with stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramirez and David Ayer — featuring exclusive footage and Q&A. Attendees will also be treated to a first-look at the edgy thriller, Death Note, based on the Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Cast and filmmakers will debut footage and discuss the project’s transition from graphic novel to film.

Netflix invites fans to join the cast and creators of the pop culture phenomenon Stranger Things, to view never-before-seen footage from the second season that picks up in the chaotic aftermath of Will Beyer’s return to a world that will never be the same.

Seeing as Netflix has yet to unveil a full-length trailer for Bright (at the time of writing this, anyway), it’s more than plausible that the streaming service will screen said preview for Ayer’s movie to those in attendance at the film’s Comic-Con panel, before releasing it online. Similarly, given that the Stranger Things season 2 Super Bowl teaser is the only footage that we have gotten from the show’s next season thus far, a fresh trailer for Stranger Things 2 (as Netflix is calling it) may also be unveiled during the ‘Con next month. Both the full-length trailer for Death Note and a Legendary Defender season 3 promo have been released already, but additional material from both TV series will be shown off during their respective Comic-Con panels, as the official panel descriptions confirm.

In addition, Netflix has confirmed that there will be a “surprise screening” for one of its original movies at this year’s Comic-Con. The screening will take place on Thursday, July 20, at 10 pm in The Horton Grand Theater and will include “interactive activities that include costume and prop displays, interactive activities and autograph signings,” set in the Convention Center lobby, ahead of time. It’s certainly plausible that either Death Note or Bright is the mystery movie in question (again, see Wingard’s history with Comic-Con), though Netflix might instead use the event to promote another one of its original movies altogether.
