Digital piracy has become a serious problem. Not only does it effect the producers who invest money into it, but it also disrupts the film viewing experience. ‘Meesaya Murukku’ which released on July 21 2017, was received well at the box office and did good business. But, it seems like the DVD release and box-office run would be affected by the rampant piracy that has hit the film.

The full film was leaked online and is available in different websites in various qualities. Shockingly, while most pirated versions are likely to be low quality recordings of the films, ‘Meesaya Murukku’ seems to have been hit hard by the fact that it was released in HD quality as well.

The download link for ‘Meesaya Murkku’ is being shared online on the social media and the increasing rate of downloads is speculated to be affecting the box office position of the film. The film is available on sites including the popular, Tamilrockers, which is enabling users to download and share the film. While the cinegoers are saving a minimal amount of money by downloading and watching the pirated version, the producers seem to be affected harshly by this act.

Last year, ‘Udta Punjab’ was leaked even before it was released which affected the business it was supposed to venture into. The piracy is not only plaguing the Kollywood, but almost every other film industry is affected by the pirating act.

The President of Producers’ Council and Secretary of Nadigar Sangam, Vishal, seems to be taking the issue seriously and has promised to adopt various measures to stop the act of piracy and fight against it. But it seems, if measures are not taken soon enough then the film industry would go into severe loss because of the piracy which makes films available easily and for free.

The film, ‘Meesaya Murukku’ stars Adithya also known as Adhi of musical duo Hiphop Tamizha. The actor also wrote the film. The films also stars Vivek, Aathamika and Vijaylakshmi among others. It was recieved well by both the audience and critics.
