As the country’s pay-TV market continues to shed subscribers, Brazil’s Agencia Nacional do Cinema (Ancine) has created a unit to coordinate the industry’s anti-piracy efforts.

After years of debate and following the recommendations of the Ministry of Culture and the demands of programmers and producers, Ancine now has a structure to coordinate the country’s anti-piracy efforts under the Programa de Combate à Pirataria.

Ancine’s role will be to facilitate specific agreements between public and private institutions, and different players within the video and TV industry.

Piracy has been pointed out as one of the possible causes that are driving the drop in subs seen in the pay-TV market over the last three years. Since 2015, it has dropped around two million households, 1.08 million of which have abandoned the market in the past 12 months.

According to calculations from Brazil’s Minisitry of Culture, the country’s GDP is losing over $550 million due to piracy.
