Cinematic ‘Gotham’ Trailer: There’s a War Coming

Though anticipation for Gotham is high, there are challenges facing it as it tries to establish its own separate corner in the burgeoning DC television universe.

Blessed with the enviable Batman rogues gallery, there is much potential, but without the use of Batman, Gothamwill have to establish a bond with the audience through the eyes of a hero (Jim Gordon) who has always been more of an ancillary character, even as played by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. A trilogy that presents another challenge.

Audiences have been spoiled rotten by Nolan’s vision of Gotham City, and when the Gotham series starts up, some may judge it harshly against the look of the films. Really, it’s an unfair comparison because one simply can’t match the visual “wow†factor of Wally Pfister’s cinematography on the small screen.

But while Gotham can’t look like the Nolan films, it can certainly carry over elements of that visual identity and the feel that the Nolan films had and, in this moment in time, FOX can also present the show to fans in a way that makes it feel cinematic with a new trailer.

Gotham-Trailer-The-Good-The-Bad-The-Begi

Beginning with a green and white ratings screen that tells us that the trailer has been approved for all lawful residents of Gotham City, this latest look at Gothamdoesn’t look that much different than a lot of the other trailers we’ve seen, but there is just a little bit more intensity thanks to the way the footage is edited together.

At this point, I imagine most of us could close our eyes and see some amalgamation of all the times that we have seen Thomas and Martha Wayne being murdered and it would look something like what will be shown on Gotham. Besides that, we get a better idea about the hard time that Gordon will face in the series, the ambition of Jada Pinkett Smith’s Fish Mooney and young Bruce Wayne’s developing issues.

Is this approach indicative of how the show itself will be presented when it premieres? Right now we don’t know, but we expect that we’ll soon start seeing reactions from the masses after Gotham screens its pilot for the assembled fans at Comic-Con in Hall H tonight during the Warner Bros. TV panel.

Gotham premieres on Monday, September 22nd, 2014 @8pm on Fox.
