Oscar-winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s new project Hateful Eight has had a rather eventful life for a film that’s only in the early stages of pre-production. After the script was leaked online, the Pulp Fiction director claimed that he would shelve it in favor of another idea he had brewing. However, after a successful script reading at the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts, Tarantino has had a change of heart and is now looking to make the western his next film, with a rumored 2015 start date for filming.

 

The fan-favorite auteur was at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend to promote his Django Unchained/Zorro crossover comic (hat tip to IndieWire), and the topic of Hateful Eight was brought up. Asked if it was in fact next on the docket, Tarantino replied, “Yeah. We’re going to be doing ‘Hateful Eight.’†So it appears those fears cinephiles had a few months ago can officially be put to rest.

 

For those unfamiliar, Hateful Eight is set in Wyoming a few years after the Civil War. It follows two bounty hunters who are taking a woman to her trial. While the script features the expected Tarantino trademarks of memorable characters and distinct dialogue, one aspect that received a lot of attention was the fact that most of the action take place in one location (a mountainside lodge). After sweeping, large-scale productions like Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, the prospect of Tarantino returning to his Reservoir Dogs roots with something a tad more intimate certainly has potential for an entertaining final product.

 

 

 

 

During his panel, Tarantino also teased fans with the prospect of him tackling a new genre by claiming he is interested in trying his hand at a sci-fi or fantasy film in the future, something he was hesitant to do earlier in his career.

 

I have a little idea right now. It’s a little flower, you know, like a bean sprout, but those tend to grow into stalks. So this is the first time I’ll be able to say ‘maybe.’ It won’t be a spaceship sci-fi, it’ll be Earthbound.

 

Those movie buffs still waiting for Vega Brothers can tell you that this is far from a confirmation that the director will indeed add this “little flower†to his filmography at some point, but it’s still an interesting idea nonetheless. Already displaying a mastery of crime and western films, the thought of Tarantino challenging himself by trying his hand at something fresh is a proposition worth getting excited about. Famous for paying homage to some cinema classics, seeing Tarantino blend some of the most iconic sci-fi genre films in his own signature style would be a treat for audiences.
