‘Paranormal Activity 5′ Aiming for Fall 2015 Release Date

Paramount, at one point, planned to release two Paranormal Activity installments this year; the spinoff Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones released back in January, but development on Paranormal Activity 5 has gone slower than anticipated. Slow enough that, at the 2014 CineEurope Conference in June, the studio announced that the sixth Paranormal Activity movie overall won’t be releasing until 2016. Well, it turns out that might not wind up being the case, either.

Bloody Disgusting‘s sources were originally reporting that Paramount and Blumhouse Productions – the company that specializes in such high profit/low investment horror/thriller offerings as the Paranormal Activity, The Purge, and Sinister franchises – have recently fast-tracked development on PA5, with the “very unrealistic†hope of making the original October 2014 claimed for the film.

Since then, however, the site has updated their story – now saying that Paranormal Activity 5 has recently picked up speed, but not enough to make a 2014 debut; instead, the project is now being eyed for an October 2015 release. PA 5 screenwriters Jason Pagan and Andrew Stark – writers on the upcoming found-footage time-travel movie Project Almanac – are said to have experienced their fair share of difficulty “cracking this story,†which is cited in the BD report as being partly to blame for the project’s slower-than-expected progress.

Then again, seeing how the Paranormal Activity mythology (arguably) doesn’t make a whole lot of sense at this stage, in combination with the Paranormal Activity 5 story needing to be tied into both PA 1-4 and The Marked Ones, it would be perfectly understandable if the writers on PA 5 have struggled to work out a coherent gameplan.

Christopher Landon, the writer/director of The Marked Ones and screenwriter of PA 2-4, has said that he and the Paranormal Activity franchise’s creators do, in fact, have an ending for the series. So far, though, there hasn’t been any indication from anyone connected with Blumhouse Productions that the next PA installment will be the final chapter; after six movies, one just assumes (hopes?) that this property will be winding down sooner than later. Even the Saw franchise eventually called it a day after seven movies – without resorting to a reboot (yet), that is.

Paranormal Activity films generally open close to Halloween, so PA 5 (assuming it’s ready to go) will presumably hit theaters on either October 23rd or 30th next year. The film shall have competition for the horror-loving crowd from Guillermo del Toro’s haunted house feature Crimson Peak and possibly The Conjuring 2 (so long as it’s not held up by lawsuits).

We’ll continue to keep you updated on Paranormal Activity 5‘s development.
