Exclusive Video: Miranda Lambert Gives the Behind-the-Scenes Story Behind Her Song 'Platinum'

Miranda Lambert knows how to celebrate ten years on the charts -- with what appears to be shaping up as her biggest album yet. Platinum, the fifth studio album from the native Texan, recently debuted at the top of the Top Country Albums chart, as well as the Billboard 200. The first two singles from the disc, “Automatic†and “Somethin’ Bad,†a duet with Carrie Underwood, have made it to the top five on the Billboard Country Singles chart.

 

In this exclusive video, Lambert -- along with co-writers Nicolle Galyon andNatalie Hemby -- discusses the story behind the title track. Watch the clip below:

 

 

Lambert and Hemby give credit for the initial spark of inspiration to Galyon. “It started off with Nicolle. She had a line, 'What doesn’t kill you only makes you blonder,'†noted Hemby. “Miranda had one that said 'My heels and my hotels -- they just got taller.' That made me laugh out loud.â€

 

As the video shows, there was some definite multi-tasking taking place during the writing of “Platinum,†according to Lambert. “She (Galyon) was yelling lines from the other room. It was the ultimate girl power. She has this little amp, and an electric guitar. I’m sitting there with wine, and she’s in there pumping breast milk. I thought ‘This is what songwriters do.'â€

 

Lambert insists the song is not to be taken too close to heart. “It’s one of those songs that is supposed to be, ‘Surely, she’s not serious.’ Then, in the second verse, you say, ‘She’s just kidding.†Lambert said it was Galyon who gave her the idea to name the album Platinum. “She said, ‘I know you’re the only one who would have the balls to name your record platinum, but I know you won’t.â€

 

That was all it took. “Don’t tell me I won’t, and here we are,†joked Lambert, who stated it’s not entirely a song about record sales status. “You automatically think, being in the music business, that it’s pretentious. But it’s not. Its about Airstreams, Bud Light Platinum, hair color, diamonds, and fun. It covers so much more.â€

 

That Airstream trailer, known as Wanda The Wanderer, can be found backstage with Lambert at every date on the Platinum tour, and her band has gotten in on the vibe as well -- adding platinum-tinted instruments and gear to their collection.
