ALS Ice Bucket Challenge gone viral: Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, Bill Gates, Tim Cook participated for good cause

Have you ever had your head submerged in water? Some of the most record-winning coaches in the American football and basketball leagues have experienced this moment of jubilation (and body freeze), but we’ve rarely seen tech leaders subjected to this much fun.

 

Today, leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and even Apple VP Phil Schiller got drenched in water to raise money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (or ALS for short). Schiller then challenged actor Chris O’Donnell and his boss Tim Cook to “go under the water†for ALS.

 

 

Even New York Governor Chris Christie took up the challenge, then challenged Facebook CEO Zuckerberg to do the same. After Zuckerberg drenched himself with water, remarking about the cold water, he challenged his Facebook partner Sheryl Sandberg to the ALS ice bucket challenge, as well as Bill Gates and Netflix Founder and CEO Reed Hastings. Bill Gates accepted the challenge and uploaded his YouTube video for all to see. Gates took the ALS ice bucket challenge to another level, using a ruler and pencil to construct the ice bucket mechanism after watching Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg challenge him. Before pouring the bucket of water on himself, Gates challenged Ryan Seacrest, Elon Musk, and Chris Anderson (TED) to engage in the ALS ice bucket challenge within 24 hours.

 

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella received his challenge, and, with a clean-shaven head and a white shirt, allowed the Microsoft hackathon team (dressed in purple shirts behind him) to dump a bucket of ice water on his head. Nadella said before going under the water that he challenges Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Google CEO Larry Page to also take up the challenge.

 

 

It’s fun to see tech leaders around the country raising awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease while enjoying a silly moment or two. When a challenge is made, stars can choose to 1) pour an ice bucket on themselves or have someone do it for them, 2) donate $100 to ALS research, or 3) pour an ice bucket and donate to research. They have 24 hours from the time of the challenge until the challenge deadline ends.
