‘The Woman in Black: Angel of Death’: First Teaser & Image

James Watkins’ 2012 period horror film The Woman in Black, based on the novel by Susan Hill, managed to achieve moderate success at the box office, no doubt partially thanks to Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe playing the lead role – and so, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a sequel is on the way the next year. The Woman in Black: Angel of Death is set 40 years after the events of the first film, and will follow a young couple charged with the care of a group of refugee children who have come to the countryside to escape from the Blitz.

Given the life expectancy of children in the tiny village of Crythin Gifford, the kids of The Woman in Black: Angel of Death would probably have been better off taking their chances with the German bombs. The film stars Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) and Phoebe Fox (Black Mirror) among its principal cast, and was directed by Tom Harper (Misfits) from a script by Jon Croker (Desert Dancer).

For those who missed it, The Woman in Black was an atmospheric but otherwise fairly average horror movie, buoyed aloft mainly by its fantastically effective sound design and a decent central performance from Radcliffe. In that film, Radcliffe played a young, recently widowed lawyer who heads to Crythin Gifford and the remote Eel Marsh House to sort out a deceased woman’s papers. Before long, however, he realizes that the house is haunted by a tortured, malevolent spirit that has been killing off local children for years.

According to the new teaser for The Woman in Black: Angel of Death, the haunting is far from over (to put it in hashtags, #sheneverleft). Fox’s character is shown investigating a mysteriously rocking chair upstairs in Eel Marsh House, and finds a room filled with creepy dolls and dust. It’s a pretty bland retread of a scene from the first film, complete with a lame jump scare at the end. Let’s hope this is just an attempt to capitalize on the appeal of The Woman in Black, and that the rest of the movie isn’t just a copycat of its predecessor.

If this particular horror movie spinoff doesn’t look all that appealing then why notcheck out the trailer for Annabelle, the upcoming movie based on the creepy doll from The Conjuring, which was also released today.

The Woman in Black: Angel of Death has no official U.S. release date yet, but is expected to arrive stateside in 2015.
