‘Nightcrawler’ Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal’s Ghoulish Adventures in L.A.

Despite the somewhat misleading title, Dan Gilroy’s upcoming crime thrillerNightcrawler tells the story of a man whose only special abilities are steadfast ambition, a cool-sounding motto and a certain degree of moral bankruptcy. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, the eager, greasy-haired opportunist who finds himself drawn to the world of freelance crime journalism: namely, the part of that world that involves filming gruesome footage to be peddled to TV news networks.

Gyllenhaal produced Nightcrawler as well as starring in it, and the film seems to be something of a passion project for him. The actor even dropped out of Disney’s musical adaptation Into the Woods in order to star in Gilroy’s film instead. Luckily it’s a decision that seems to have paid off, as the second trailer for Nightcrawler has now arrived and offers a new look at the darkly humorous tale of Los Angeles’ less-glamorous brand of night life.

Nightcrawler also stars Riz Ahmed (Four Lions) as Lou’s navigator and protegé Rick and Rene Russo (who played Frigga in Thor and Thor: The Dark World) as Nina, a news executive with a hunger for Lou’s ghoulish coverage. Based on the shot of Lou dragging a body around at the scene of an accident, it looks like he doesn’t manage to stay in the game for long without getting his hands dirty.

Based on the tone of this trailer, Nightcrawler feels distinctly like a Bret Easton Ellis adaptation (perhaps it’s just the L.A. setting), but the screenplay is an original story written by Gilroy, whose past writing credits include Real Steel and The Bourne Legacy. It also marks Gilroy’s feature directorial debut, and its budget included a$2.3 million allocation from the California Film Tax Credit program.

Nightcrawler certainly seems like it has the makings of a classic crime thriller and Gyllenhaal – who lost 20 pounds in order to play the lead role – looks convincingly sleazy and maniacal. The film will premiere at Toronto International Film Festival next month before its wider release. Let us know in the comments if this trailer has convinced you to see Nightcrawler in theaters this fall.

Nightcrawler arrives in theaters on October 17, 2014.
