HTC tablet ref docs hint, Android L or LMP stands for “Lemon Meringue Pie�

We’ve talked about Lemon Cake, Lollipop, Laffy Taffy, and some other dessert names being used for the “Android L†update that’s scheduled to arrive with the Nexus 6 and the HTC Nexus 9.

 

Well, we have good evidence for the “LMP†acronymic designation for Google’s upcoming Android update now. According to a new HTC tablet’s Wi-Fi certification (Codenamed “Flounderâ€), the next Android update could be “Lemon Meringue Pie,†rather than Lollipop, Lemon Cake, Laffy Taffy, or any other “L†dessert names.

 

While the recent certification date (August 15) and the HTC-designated device makes us hopeful that this refers to the HTC Nexus 9, we don’t know if Google will stick with LMP or change the moniker. Nine months before Google unveiled Android 4.4 KitKat, the company continued to use “KLP†as the designation for the next update so as to prevent anyone from discovering that the company had changed the update name before Google unveiled its KitKat bugdroid statue at the company’s Mountain View, California headquarters. With that said, it seems as though Google may still be undecided about the name, seeing that “Android L†is listed on the Wi-Fi certification document. Google wouldn’t be one to give away the update this easily – although we have seen Google leak new devices and update names here and there in the past few years.

 

Google announced that “Android L†would be the next major update at its I/O 2014 Conference at the end of June, but the only information we’ve gathered so far about the next major update comes from Google’s own words about the Material Design changes the company’s looking to bring to the Android experience. In fact, Android L is one of the most well-kept updates yet, seeing that, unlike years past, Google hasn’t leaked much information about it. Aside from the OS update name change, and Material Design language being implemented in Google’s Play Store app already, we know that Google looks to change YouTube and the Google Play Music service in Android L.
