Schwarzenegger Zombie Movie ‘Maggie’ Releasing in Early 2015

It kind of threw people for a loop when the first image of Arnold Schwarzeneggerin the upcoming film Maggie first circulated the Interwebs. For those who weren’t aware of the project’s announcement or casting, the film stars Schwarzenegger (obvs) alongside Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) in a zombie movie that is decidedly different from something like Day of the Dead or even Zombieland (which Breslin also starred in).

Maggie uses the premise of the zompocalypse to tell a much more intimate, indie-style story about a girl named Maggie (Breslin) who is one of many people infected in the zombie outbreak. Knowing her impending doom is approaching, Maggie finds comfort at home on the family farm, in the care of her loving father, Wade (Schwarzenegger). The film soon premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival, but now we have a better idea when it will be hitting theaters outside the festival circuit.

Lionsgate has picked up Maggie and will be releasing it in theaters in early 2015. According to the official press release:

The film tells the story of a deadly zombie virus that has put a plague on the world. When Maggie, a vivacious young woman becomes infected, her father brings her home to let her be with their family. As Maggie’s condition worsens, their relationship is tested, a father’s love holding on stronger than the disease. This heart-wrenching twist on the zombie apocalypse puts a human face on an inexplicable horror.

The hook of the film (for cinephiles anyway) is that the script was penned by John Scott 3 and made the 2011 Hollywood Black List of Best Unproduced Screenplays. It is being directed by Henry Hobson, a visual artist renowned for his title credits sequences. That’s some promising upcoming talent behind this film, and while Schwarzenegger’s recent role choices haven’t resulted in box office gold, per se, this looks like the actor trying a change of pace – and Breslin’s presence bodes well for that direction.

Look… there’s the end of THE world, and then there are events that feel like the end of OUR world, on a personal level. Maggie looks like it will deal with both scales of that drama. Movies like Romero’s Dead movies – and now TV series like WalkingDead - have almost left us with zombie overload – but this film somehow feels like has carved out a niche all for itself. We’re intrigued – that’s all the lure you need.

Maggie will be in theaters in early 2015.
