U2 release 'Songs of Innocence' free on iTunes

U2 is releasing its latest album for free on iTunes.

 

The rockers took the stage at Apple's latest product unveiling in Cupertino, California Tuesday to perform The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone), a track from their new album, Songs of Innocence.

 

Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed the crowd after the show, reports Rolling Stone.

 

"Wasn't that the most incredible single you ever heard? We would love a whole album of that,' he said.

 

"The question is now, how do we get it to as many people as possible, because that's what our band is all about," frontman Bono responded. "I do believe you have over half a billion subscribers to iTunes, so - could you get this to them?"

"If we gave it away for free," Cook replied.

 

Bono then revealed the entire offering would be released Tuesday exclusively on iTunes in 119 countries at no cost to fans. The music will also be available on Beats Music, now owned by Apple, through October 13.

 

Bono spoke to Rolling Stone the day before the event about the offering, which he said U2 had worked on for two years.

 

'We wanted to make a very personal album," he told reporter Gus Wenner. 'Let's try to figure out why we wanted to be in a band, the relationships around the band, our friendships, our lovers, our family. The whole album is first journeys - first journeys geographically, spiritually, sexually. And that's hard. But we went there."
