To be absolutley honest in my humble opinion, for the time it takes some of these programs to run and clean up the system, if you have a partition set up were your data is saved, I find it much faster and a heck of a lot cleaner to install a fresh new OS.

People come to me all the time asking for me to clean there system to which I reply save what you need saving and will have it back to you in a few hours as if you got it of the shelf :)

Since Windows 7 I've not found the need to use that kind of tools, but I remember freen GBs of space with CCleaner on XP, removing the possibility to backroll Windows updates -I don't know if that was a smart thing to do-..

The most thorough one is dd if=/dev/zero of=<drive you need to clean> :D

But seriously, CCleaner is probably the best (alternative ;)).
