As we close out the summer season, it’s time to figure out which Guardians of the Galaxy character we’re going to be for Halloween (dancing baby Groot all the way) and gear up for the onslaught of horror movies that will try to terrify us in the next few months. Sadly, we may be without two notable titles, as both Amityville: The Awakening and James Wan Presents Demonic have had their release dates pulled.

Amityville was slated for January 2nd while Demonic was slated for December 12th. Fortunately, there are a number of upcoming horror movies for fans of the genre to enjoy – including Annabelle, Horns, The Babadook, and more – but the disappearance of Amityville and Demonic is notable nonetheless.

For those who don’t know, Amityville was considered neither a follow-up to the 2005 Reynolds vehicle nor a remake of the original, but rather a reboot that deals with the same house that makes all its inhabitants want to kill each other.

As for Demonic – which features Maria Bello (A History of Violence) and Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as investigators looking into a series of murders that might have some nefarious paranormal causality – much less is known. There’s been no trailer and there’s been very little news. Of course, James Wan is still considered one of the foremost names in horror. Having directed Insidious,Insidious 2, and last year’s box office horror darling The Conjuring, he’s been on a roll.

Then again, Demonic was directed by Will Canon – who’s only feature credit is 2010’s Brotherhood â€“ with Wan acting only as the co-writer and producer, so maybe his luck didn’t rub off quite as much as the studios had hoped.

The decision to move these release dates seems odd, as Dimension released the trailer for Amityville just four weeks ago and it looks genuinely creepy, or at least significantly creepier than the Ryan Reynolds letdown from 2005. And considering Wan’s track record, one would think that Demonic could do very well.

There’s no word if the pulled release dates are to push the movies earlier in the year to be more competitive with the rest of the brood or later to more or less cast them into the pit of totally forgotten mid-winter fare (which feels the more likely of the pair). We’ll have to wait and see to find out.
